The credit hour assignment procedure is intended to ensure that the College uses acceptable and consistent methods for assigning credit hours to all courses and programs of study. Consistency in credit hour determinations will standardize all courses and programs – regardless of teaching and learning formats or delivery mode – to have sufficient academic rigor, content, and depth.
In accord with the U.S. Department of Education definition, a credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement. Academic credit for each course and program is determined by the faculty, evaluated by the Curriculum Committee, reviewed by the Academic Council and recommended by the Vice President for Learning and Student Success/Provost to the President for approval.
The standard for credit hour shall be one hour (56.66 minutes) of class instruction and two hours of out-of-class student work for fourteen weeks plus an exam week or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. Variations include 5-week, 6-week, 8-week, 10-week, and 12-week sessions. Modes of delivery adhering to this standard for credit hour include onsite, online, hybrid, and independent study.
Credit hours are applied to academic activities as follows:
Class 1 credit = 1 hour/week
Laboratory 1 credit = 2 hours/week
Clinical/Experiential Learning 1 credit = 3 hours/week
Internship 1 credit = 3 hours/week
Approved or accredited programs will follow standards/regulations regarding required hours to maintain approval or accreditation status.
