CCBC NAMES TWO STUDENTS TO THE ALL-PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMIC TEAM
Each year, Pennsylvania’s 14 community colleges together with Phi Theta Kappa, the national two-year college honor society, honor community college students from across the commonwealth for their academic achievements in the classroom and volunteerism in their communities.
This year, Community College of Beaver County names Paige Burke of Beaver Falls, PA andDarlene Wilcox of Beaver Falls, PA as the 2014 All-PA Academic Team for the College.
An Upper Elementary-Middle Level Education major, Paige Burke plans to transfer to Slippery Rock University after graduation to pursue an Education in Mathematics degree. She hopes to one day be a middle school math teacher. Paige is the current president of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society as well as the Student Government Association treasurer. She is also a CCBC Student Ambassador. Paige has volunteered on campus for the PTK “Passionately Pink for the Cure” event, the CCBC Foundation HollyDay, and SGA events. In addition to her on-campus activities and working part-time, she volunteers off-campus for her church bell choir and Vacation Bible School.
Darlene Wilcox is a Social Work major who plans to transfer after graduation to either Slippery Rock University or the California University of Pennsylvania in order to obtain a bachelor’s degree in social work. Her future career plan is to become a social worker, helping clients with addiction issues. Darlene is a current member of the College’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Social Work Club. Darlene has volunteered on campus to raise funds for Phi Theta Kappa and the World Vision service agency. In addition, she serves as the CCBC Student Representative on the Act 101 and Perkins special populations grants advisory boards. Darlene’s community volunteerism includes providing child care on weekends; providing transportation for the elderly in her community to attend medical appointments; Prison Ministries; Trails Ministries; and as the Point in Time Study clothing coordinator.
In order to be named to the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team, students must also maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher.
