CCBC Reduces Student Books Costs with New, Online Subscription Service

Community College of Beaver County (CCBC) today announced that it will make the vast majority of student course materials available online beginning in the Fall 2019 semester, saving students money and ensuring they have their necessary course materials on day one of class.

CCBC is the first non-profit higher-education institution in Pennsylvania to provide its students with access to most or all of their course materials online with one low fee.

Upon enrollment, students will receive a subscription to Cengage Unlimited - the new, cost-effective service – that, at a rate of $179.99/year, will cover the cost of digital textbooks and other online learning resources. The annual subscription cost can save students several hundred dollars each year, compared to the cost for traditional textbooks. According to a recent Morning Consult survey, the cost of course materials is a top financial stress for students.

“Making sure that our students have every opportunity to be successful from the start is our number one priority, and providing Cengage Unlimited is a huge step forward in both accessibility and cost,” said Dr. Shelly Moore, Vice President of Academic Affairs/Provost.

Cengage Unlimited gives students unlimited access to more than 22,000 digital course materials, including eBooks, online homework and study guides. Students using Cengage technology platforms, like MindTap or WebAssign, also have the option of a print rental for an additional $7.99 per text with free shipping.

Subscription costs for Cengage Unlimited will be included in tuition and fees. Students will be able to access their Cengage course materials through the college learning management system beginning on the first day of class.

“The cost of course materials is a barrier for many students and our partnership aims to address affordability issues while providing access to quality learning,” said Fernando Bleichmar, EVP and General Manager, Higher Education and Skills at Cengage. “It is great that CCBC is taking a proactive approach to lower costs with Cengage Unlimited, and we’re excited for the learning benefit and value students will see as a result.”

Cengage, the largest U.S.-based education and technology company serving the higher education market, provides course materials to almost half of the 20 million students pursuing higher education.
